Car Battery Tester

 Today’s automobiles are sophisticated machines with GPS navigation, LCD screens, DVD players and iPods. However, all of these 21st century technological wonders are still at the mercy of the car battery and the automobiles electrical system. Car batteries have improved over the years but the technology is basically the same. Most of us do not even think of our car battery until our reliable car refuses to start and we are stranded in a parking lot. A modern car battery tester can evaluate trouble with your automotive battery and determine the correct course of action a technician needs to take.

 The car battery tester measures the voltage drop when an applied load that is the car battery’s CCA rating is used. The load is applied for at least 15 seconds and the voltage drop is measured. The voltage should not drop below 9.6 volts for the battery to be considered good. (Also the ambient temperature should be around 70 F) For example, you have a battery with Cold Cranking Amp rating of 600 CCA. You would apply a load of 300 amps for 15 seconds. If the measured voltage does go below 9.6 volts, the battery is still good. It is possible to use a car battery tester in differing temperature conditions, but you must compensate for the difference in your calculations.

 If the car battery has been completely discharged, you will have to recharge it using a suitable car battery charger. Do not attempt to use a quick charger type battery charger if yours is in this condition. These types of automotive battery chargers use a high current to get you fast results. This high current can damage the sensitive plates in your battery when it is in a fully discharged state. Another method to avoid is just to get a pair of jumper cables and jump start the dead car and then let the alternator recharge it. Your car’s alternator is not a car battery charger and it cannot recharge a totally discharged battery without getting damaged.

 Be sure to let the battery cool down to room temperature. People often forget how hot it gets inside of an engine compartment, especially in the summer months. That goes for cold weather as well. You may have to let the battery warm up to room temperature. Batteries perform differently at temperature extremes and that’s why its important to use room temperature as the standard to accurately measure them.

Car Battery Life

Batteries are made with a series of grids or plates and these are coated with a lead paste, the materials may differ when used on the positive and negative plates. It is when these are immersed in electrolyte, which is diluted sulphuric acid, that the electrons build up a charge on these plates.

When you turn the key in your car, it is the electrons that flow freely through the cables to the starter and all of the electrical system in the car. How many of you have tried to start a car at some time or another with a flat battery, or even worse one that is not as charged up as it should be.

It is the winter months especially when you have to make sure that your battery is in tiptop condition and good working order. It’s these months that batteries have to provide you with maximum power to start your car. Sometimes this can be restricted because of the low temperatures that can occur, and depending of course, as to what area or region you live.

It is worth remembering that the batteries power can become restricted because of any change in the weather for example your battery will only have 40% of its power when you turn your ignition key if the temperature drops below 40c when it actually needs two to three times as much in order for your car to start.

It is always essential for everybody to ensure that your battery is fully charged irrespective of the weather. Having a fully charged battery that will deliver all the power to your car is necessary in the prevention of any mishaps or embarrassing breakdowns.

The difference in a new fully charged battery is that the plate material has no problem in generating all the electrons that are necessary. It is as the battery ages that a lot of the plate material will slowly sulphate or harden. When this starts to happen, it becomes less capable of either producing or holding a charge.

There can often be a difference of opinion as to the actual life of the battery, there are those that say a battery should last approximately five years, this is normally the time when you might experience starting problems when turning your ignition on.

Then it has been known for batteries to last as long as seven years and in some cases longer, normally it is five years or a little over before you may start experiencing any problems. If it goes for a lot longer over this time then you can call that a bonus.

. One occurrence that can happen is if your battery is sitting loosely, this will cause it vibrate and rattle around eventually cracking material on the plates. This will eventually loosen falling into the bottom of your batteries case.

This in time will cause a problem because the batteries surface area will not produce the electricity needed to function properly, and any loose material could fall in between a positive and negative plate that will cause them to short out and to cease working. That is why when purchasing a battery always go for the good quality one, these come with special sleeves built in around the plates preventing any damage from loose material bridging the two plates.

A common mistake made by most people at some time or other is leaving the car lights on, an easy thing to do in the winter months especially when all you want to do is park the car and go indoors. If the lights are left on until the battery goes dead, this will no doubt cause damage.

Once the battery is discharged, the plate material will start to harden, and it is because of this that the portion of plate affected won’t accept when trying to charge it again. The best solution if possible is if your battery has discharged, you must try to charge it back up as soon as possible. It has been known that if a battery completely discharges more than four times, reducing its capacity, then the only answer is to recycle it and purchase a new battery.

Have you ever experienced that arrested experience that grips you if you turn the key and your car won’t start? Most of us have felt that “oh no, not now” feeling at one time or another.

Most of us don’t carry jumper cables in our car. So, now you must cell-it over to a towing company. Ouch…that going to cost an ugly penny. Then, when you get the $40.00 minimum-auto-mechanic labor word that you need a new battery, you can kiss another $50.00 bye-bye.

The lead acid battery industry is a $14B (that’s Billion) a year business. Hardly anyone ever thinks of it, but nothing happens if a vehicle doesn’t start.

The number one automobile problem is failure to start. Moreover, of all cars that don’t start, the primary reason is traced to a lead acid battery.

Surprisingly the people involved with providing solutions to that maximum-huge problem for the mass consuming public wouldn’t be happy if all people knew that a patent pending, completely safe to use, consumer product solves 99% of the problem, and cost’s one dollar per battery to do it. If you are in the business of selling lead acid batteries, and all of a sudden you begin to sell half as many this year as last year, you are going to earn less profit this year, than last year.

That big picture races out to a waste in the lead acid battery industry of over 7 billion a year that is easily eliminated. But, that’s just scratching the surface of the economic benefits Everybody may enjoy.

Hundreds of millions of dollars represent the annual lead acid battery accessory market. Then, there’s the area of fleet vehicle maintenance, from the federal government, to over-the-road transport, to the corporate vehicle asset category. Much of that market is outsourced today. Do you really think, that the contract vehicle maintenance business spends much time selling their clients on cleaning lead acid batteries every month? Maintenance vehicle mechanics time is costly. Let’s estimate $40.00 an hour. That’s the cost of a replacement lead acid battery. Almost 40% of the $14B lead acid battery market is replacement category. Would you believe at least half of that market is wasted due to over-purchasing?

When people are willing to pay more than that for a cup of coffee, you’d think they would beat the door down to get this amazing product. Maybe they would, but if you are a small company, and you know you can sell your product by calling cold on one prospect at a time, and make a profit, and you aren’t a marketing expert, you just keep on, keeping on. You should purchase a battery terminal cleaner set. It has a brush for cleaning top post terminals, and for the side postholes. Be careful when brushing the holes, so you don’t mess up the screw grooves. The other part of the cleaner is for cleaning the top post stud on the battery itself. Turn it on the studs a few times to score it a little, and brush out the inside of the cable clamps. Place the cables back starting with the negative, then the positive terminal. Don’t be alarmed if it sparks a little, there are things like the clock on your radio that require power even when the motor is off. Secure tightly, and if your vehicle doesn’t start right away, tighten a little more until it does.
